Obesity is rising exponentially so are the ailments like Hypertension and diabetes. On one hand, we are struggling to deal with hunger and malnutrition on the other hand problems of plenty keep on disturbing us.

Of late I encounter more and more pregnant women who cross the 100 kg mark till term. So do they gain this much weight during pregnancy? No, the weight gain during pregnancy is around 15 kg, a higher limit than normal. Then where does the problem lie? The thing of concern is they start at 70 kg and above. To add fuel to the fire, these girls are so much pampered that they are told to stop working at home and work and consume all sorts of high-calorie food.

What are the consequences? They land up having hypertension and high blood sugar levels. Moreover, their activities get restricted and flexibility reduces. Average baby weight too has gone up from 2.5 kg to 3 kg and above. The size of the maternal pelvis hasn’t increased proportionately as a result incidence of operative delivery aka Caesarean section has gone up considerably. The question arises why has the incidence of obesity gone up so much?

We all know the answer but are unable to address it. The most common causes of obesity are physical inactivity, overeating, genetic predisposition, and some conditions like hypothyroidism and polycystic ovaries. Obesity has risen exponentially in the last decade, more so in urban girls and women. Although all of us are aware of the consequences of being overweight very few take concrete steps to curb it. Although easier said than done, I would like to appeal to all the young women out there to take this seriously and try to reduce weight before they plan pregnancy.

Simple steps of eating healthy food, restricting intake of fast food, too many carbs and fats, cheese and butter, and increasing intake of proteins, vegetables, and fruits will go a long way in keeping weight in check. I must add that physical activity is a must, be it a brisk walk or a quick run or simple skipping at home would suffice to keep you toned and increase your stamina too.

So gals pull up your socks, take up the gauntlet and fight obesity with all your might. It feels great to be in shape. Give it a try!
